Wegovy (Semaglutide)

What Wegovy is, how it is dosed here, and the side effects stated plainly — before you decide anything.

Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, formulated and licensed specifically for chronic weight management rather than diabetes. It is one of three GLP-1 medicines we work with, alongside Ozempic and Mounjaro — this page sets out what makes it specific.

What it is

Active ingredientManufacturerClassAdministration

  • 01Appetite regulationSemaglutide mimics the natural GLP-1 hormone, signalling fullness earlier and quieting cravings.
  • 02Slower gastric emptyingFood stays in the stomach longer, extending the feeling of fullness after a normal meal.
  • 03Steadier blood sugarInsulin release becomes better matched to what you have eaten, even independent of weight loss.
Dosed specifically for weight managementDosed specifically for weight managementWegovy reaches a higher maintenance dose than Ozempic typically does — the two are not interchangeable prescriptions.

How treatment is structured here

Every course begins with a full assessment — history, bloods, contraindications — before anything is prescribed. Dosing starts low and rises in planned stages, only if the current dose is well tolerated.

  • Medical assessment and eligibility review before prescribing
  • Dose titration supervised at scheduled reviews
  • Nutrition counselling to protect muscle mass throughout
  • Side-effect management built into every follow-up

Side effects

Nausea, constipation and reflux are the most common, typically early and usually settling as the dose stabilises. They are managed by adjusting meal size and timing before considering any change to the dose itself.

Not suitable for everyone

Certain thyroid cancer histories, pancreatitis, pregnancy and breastfeeding are among the reasons Wegovy may not be appropriate. This is exactly what the consultation is for.

Who should not take it

Any one of these needs to be discussed openly before treatment starts — some rule it out, others simply need specialist input first.

  • Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or MEN2 syndrome
  • Previous pancreatitis, or active gallbladder disease
  • Pregnancy, planned pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • Severe gastrointestinal disease, including gastroparesis
  • A current or past eating disorder, without specialist input first

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, those doses usually need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. Bring a complete list of your medications and supplements to your assessment.

Questions

Wegovy, answered

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?

Same active ingredient — semaglutide — but different licensed use and typically a higher maintenance dose in Wegovy, since it is formulated for weight management specifically.

How is it taken?

A once-weekly injection, self-administered with a prefilled pen after training at your first appointment.

How much weight will I lose?

It varies by individual, dose tolerated and adherence. We set expectations against your own history at assessment rather than quoting a general figure.

Can I take it with other medications?

Often yes, though insulin and sulfonylurea doses frequently need adjusting. Bring your full medication list to your assessment.

What happens if I stop?

Appetite typically returns, and weight commonly returns with it. Any planned stop is tapered with a maintenance strategy rather than abrupt.

Does The Prime Fit sell Wegovy online?

No. Eligibility and prescribing are confirmed at a medical consultation only. We do not sell or dispense medication online.
